Teeth Whitening Hacks: Home Remedies to Whiten Your Teeth

Teeth whitening hacks

Teeth whitening hacks are all about getting whiter teeth at home, without the hassle and expense of over-the-counter or dentist-prescribed teeth whitening products. Let’s call it like it is, no one wants to have yellow teeth. One common solution if you happen to have them, is to take a trip to the dentist, or the store for a teeth whitening kit.  But what if you don’t have dental coverage, or the money? Is there any way to whiten your teeth from home?  Of course there is!

Here are 5 of the best teeth whitening hacks for teeth whitening at home.

1. Teeth whitening hacks:  Banana Peel

Banana is a fruit that has many benefits for the body.  Most people just throw the peel away.  The next time you’re about to throw the peels away, rub them on your teeth for two minutes instead. Use this method of teeth whitening two or three times each week and eventually, you’ll notice that your pearly whites will be shining.  How do banana peels whiten teeth?  Bananas and their peels contain potassium, magnesium, and manganese.  These three nutrients sink into your teeth and whiten them from the inside out.

2. Teeth whitening hacks: Strawberries

Strawberries are a sweet treat for many fruit lovers, but strawberries aren’t just tasty, they’re great for teeth whitening too!  To get the benefits of strawberries, take one or two and mash them up in a small bowl.  Apply the mashed berries to your teeth for 2-3 minutes and then rinse your mouth or brush your teeth. Strawberries have two key qualities that help whiten your teeth.  First, they are a natural source of malic acid, which is one of the main ingredients in whitening toothpaste.  Second, they contain natural fiber, which is good for cleaning and cleansing yellow teeth. The fiber also helps to kill bacteria in the mouth.

3. Teeth whitening hacks: Oil Pulling

Oil pulling is an ancient Indian remedy for maintaining good oral health. The process is simple and relatively inexpensive. To oil pull, simply take one teaspoon of pure oil such as coconut oil and swish it around in your mouth as if you were rinsing your mouth out. Don’t spit the oil out though.  Instead, swish it around, gargle it, and push and pull it through the space between your teeth for 15 minutes. Then, spit the oil out, rinse your mouth thoroughly, and drink two glasses of plain water.  Oil pulling works by combining the oil with saliva and creating a white liquid.  The swishing movements required for oil pulling activate enzymes, and the enzymes draw toxins out of the bloodstream. As you continue to swish the oil, it draws toxins out of your mouth and teeth, making the oil toxic, which is why you spit it out afterward instead of swallowing!

4. Teeth whitening hacks: Baking Soda and Lemon Juice

Baking soda is a common ingredient in many whitening toothpastes.  It’s gentle, yet abrasive enough to scrub away surface stains that may be on your teeth.  Lemon juice is known to have a natural bleaching property, but is also known to be acidic.  When baking soda and lemon juice are mixed into a paste, the baking soda helps to lessen the acidic effects of the lemon juice.  Together, baking soda and lemon juice create an easy and inexpensive home whitening solution.  While the acidic properties of the lemon juice and the abrasiveness of baking soda can be helpful in whitening your teeth, they can also be harmful if they’re used too often.  To use them together, simply mix a few teaspoons of baking soda with enough lemon juice to make a thick paste.  Dip your toothbrush into the paste, and brush your teeth as usual.

5. Teeth whitening hacks: Carrots

If you like to crunch on carrots for a snack, you’re already whitening your teeth without even knowing it! How?  Crunchy carrots are good for removing stubborn plaque from your teeth, and are also a good natural cleaner.  Carrots also kill bacteria that are found in your mouth, not to mention that they’re full of vitamin C, which is an essential nutrient for strong and healthy (and whiter) teeth.  If you don’t want to eat the carrot, some people say that rubbing raw carrot sticks on your teeth for a few minutes has the same benefit as eating it does.  However, there isn’t much research on this.  It could very well work though, as rubbing things such as peelings of fruit on the teeth has been known to have a whitening effect.

It’s amazing all the foods you have in your kitchen can whiten teeth, regardless of whether we know that they’re doing it or not. Educating oneself about natural home remedies that whiten teeth is the best way to start the whitening process, and with so many home whitening options and recipes available, you’re bound to find a few that you like and that work for your individual needs.
