Crunchy Low Carb Snacks
Crunchy Low Carb Snacks
We all love a good snack when we can’t wait until dinner and we need a little something to tide us over, or when we’re particularly bored and need a little help with procrastination. There’s no scenario in which a snack doesn’t seem like a great idea, especially crunchy low carb snacks!
Crunchy snacks in particular are a common favorite. Chips, pretzels, popcorn and the likes are hard to resist. The only trouble is that our favorite crunchy snacks aren’t always the healthiest snacking options. They can be high in carbs and as we already know, carbs can be a real threat to your figure.
Here are 5 crunchy low carb snacks, so that you can still enjoy a few snacks each day, without worrying too much about the old saying ‘a moment on the lips, a lifetime on the hips.’
1. Pizza – done the healthy way
You might be thinking that pizza is definitely not a low carb snack, and you’re right, usually it isn’t. But if we give our pizza a makeover, and change a few of the ingredients, it can still be one of the tastiest snacks out there, only with a lot less carbs.
The base of the pizza is the main problem with this snack, in terms of carbs, and so as long as we can substitute that doughy base for something a little lighter, there’s no reason why we should avoid mini pizza snacks.
There are a few ways you can modify pizza, but a nice and easy (and of course tasty) one to try is swapping the bready base for zucchini. Simply slice the zucchini, and fry the slices (which will be your mini pizza bases) until they’re golden, adding any seasoning you fancy. Remember the thinner you slice your zucchini the more crunch there’ll be! Then you can top each slice with a bit of tomato puree or marinara sauce, a bit of cheese, and any other of your favorite toppings. And then there you have it, mini zucchini pizza slices – a delicious snack that you don’t have to feel guilty about.
2. Breadsticks – without the bread
Breadsticks are one of the most moreish snacks out there. We can’t just have one, and they never seem to fill us up. But however many we have, ordinary bread sticks are carb-heavy. That doesn’t mean though that you have to give up breadsticks all together, after all they’re perfect to nibble on before a meal. Again, this low carb crunchy snack hack is just a case of substituting the carb filled ingredient with a healthier alternative.
It might sound crazy, getting rid of the bread in breadsticks, but the crunch can be sourced from other ingredients, and bread alternatives can even be more flavorsome.
One bread alternative is cauliflower. It sounds crazy, but believe me it works, and it tastes good too. You’ll need to chop a large cauliflower very finely, or put it in a food processor until it resembles rice. Then cook the cauliflower in the oven, microwave or by steam. After that it’s the fun part, you get to squeeze all of the moisture out of the cauliflower. You can use a linen towel or glass cloth, put the cauliflower in it and squeeze out the moisture. Then you can add an egg, some cheese and any seasoning you want to the dry cauliflower, mix it together, then spread the mixture out in a baking tray and bake! Then you’ll have a no-carb cheesy breadstick.
3. Alternative chips
Chips are one of the most common go-to snack options. They’re crunchy and they’re tasty, but if there’s one thing they’re not, it’s healthy. Most chips are made from potatoes and oil, so full of fat and carbs. But did you know there are some chips out there that have no carbs at all? Admittedly they’re not potato chips, instead egg chips have become more popular.
Egg chips might not sound like the crunchiest, or tastiest of snacks, but with this crispy snack you can make it taste exactly how you want it.
To make them you’ll need to start off by mixing together egg whites with any seasoning you fancy. Then just pour a small amount of the egg mix into each cup of a muffin tray, and bake until crispy. If you fancy cheesy chips, you can sprinkle a little cheese on top of each chip before they go in the oven.
Or if making your own egg chips seems like a bit too much effort, more vegetable chip companies have emerged in the last couple of years, so you could always stock up on vegetable chips.
4. Spice up nutty snacks by roasting them
Nuts are a great low carb snack, and they’re as crunchy as it gets. But some nuts can seem fairly plain, and we just don’t care for a bland snack. So this snack hack will help you bring a little flavor and creativity to a nutty snack.
Almonds are perfect for roasting, and can be flavored in any way you fancy. Roast them for around 15 minutes and coat them with your chosen flavorings – that’s literally all you need to do and you’ve got yourself the perfect snack. Of course, you could always eat almonds raw, but this method of preparation makes them extra tasty, and extra crunchy!
The best part about this snack is that rather than having to worry about whether it’s filling you with carbs, you can rest assured that with every almond you’re getting vitamins, protein and fiber – which will all give you a nice burst of energy. You can also spice up other nuts and seeds by roasting them, including pumpkin seeds!
5. Go low carb and crunchy with meats
So this one may be low in carbs, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a healthy option, so consider this snack more of a treat if you’re on a diet.
Beef jerky and pepperoni sticks can come with a fair amount of crunch, and make a mouth watering snack. You can buy these snacks from most shops, or if you have the time and patience you can make these at home relatively easily.
To make beef jerky you simply need to season and flavor strips of beef with salt, sugar, Worcestershire sauce, paprika and any other of your favorite flavorings, dehydrate or bake the beef and leave it to dry.
If you plan ahead for your snack cravings, it’s easy to come up with healthy and low carb alternatives for our usual snacks. Trying a few of these snack hacks might even introduce you to a few alternatives that you actually prefer, and a few more flavor combinations.
So try some of these crunchy low carb snacks out, and lessen your overall carb intake. You’ll feel better for doing it, and less guilty about snacking throughout the day!
